So the crew has been slacking on the fishing reports this year. July was a tough month in the canal but August has been excellent. Weather has been cooperative and so have the fish. We have weighed in a few fish over 40 lbs this month! We have seen pictures of fish breaking the 50 lb mark. Big Jake has had his fair share of big fish this month. He has caught plenty of fish in the thirty pound range and a few fish over 40 lbs. Most of these fish fell prey to top water pencil poppers. I predict during the rest of the migration fish will follow this feeding pattern. As the month of August comes to an end, we can expect fish to start migration. This is the time of the year that the cows really start to push through. It also happens to be the time the funny fish (False Albacore and Bonito) show up. Last year there were a ton of Albies in the canal! Schools of Albies were seen as far east as Scusset Beach which is not very common. They tend to be caught more successfully on lighter tackle with light line. I would suggest 20# fluorocarbon leader with a metal or epoxy jig. We have seen Albies in the sound but as always it is a run and gun style fishery.
